Colorado State looked to finally put an end to its conference losing woes on the road with a trip to Mountain West bottom feeder Boise State Wednesday night, but a late night nail biter once again went against the Rams' favor.
Boise State's Derrick Marks hit a banker with .8 seconds remaining in regulation to upend the Rams 70-69 in Boise, Idaho, sending CSU to a 0-5 Mountain West record away from Moby Arena. It also leaves the Rams at 4-5 in conference play and 15-9 overall, putting them in a tie for fifth place with Wyoming.
For a second consecutive game, junior Wes Eikmeier notched a career high in points, scoring 30. He set his previous high of 26 points just four days ago in a loss at TCU.
Boise State's Kenny Buckner also set a career-best in points with 20, which led all Broncos scorers.
CSU trailed 64-56 with 4:42 remaining, but went on an 11-0 run with under a minute thirty left to regain the lead. They held on for a one point advantage heading into their final offensive possession, but failed to get up a shot and turned the ball over due to a shot clock violation. Marks then ran the floor with five ticks remaining and split a pair of CSU defenders to put Boise up for good.
Junior guard Jesse Carr had arguably his best game of the season, connecting for 15 points, 4 rebounds and two assists. Pierce Hornung had a game-high 11 boards, but only produced 2 points.
Senior forward Will Bell saw limited action due to swelling in his knees, but the Rams still outrebounded the Broncos 35-24. CSU shot 42 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc, but shot a frustrating 19-30 (63 percent) from the free throw line. The Rams led the conference in free throw percentage heading into the game at 78 percent.
CSU returns home for Saturday's Border War showdown with Wyoming. The game is an 'orange-out' for CSU fans as the home team will don their orange Aggies throwbacks for the first time this season. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will also receive an orange headband.
As of Wednesday night, fewer than 500 tickets remained for sale. Tipoff is slated for 7 PM MST at Moby Arena in Fort Collins.
