Colorado State lost to yet another in-state program, this time falling to mid-major Northern Colorado 73-64 on Sunday evening in Greeley, CO.
After winning their first five games, CSU (6-4) has now lost four of their last five games. CSU once again struggled defensively, allowing Northern Colorado to shoot 50% from the field and 44% from three.
The Rams offense had an off night, shooting 38% from the field, 30% from three and 60% from the free throw line. Gian Clavell led the way with 18 points, Antwan Scott contributed 13 points off the bench and John Gillon added 10 points.
Defensive Struggles Continue
Northern Colorado point guard Jordan Wilson, who checks in at 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, torched CSU for 20 points and 5 assists. Wilson showed great poise and was effective creating for himself and his teammates. CSU didn't have an answer for the diminutive point guard. Wilson received great support from Dallas Anglin, playing his first game for Northern Colorado after transferring from Southern Mississippi last year. Anglin scored 19 points in his debut, slashing to the rim at will and converting from beyond the arc. Northern Colorado hit timely shots and played great defense against CSU.
Offense Has An Off Night
While CSU's defensive struggles have been apparent, their offense has been the lone bright spot this season. That wasn't the case tonight. CSU only had three double-digit scorer's, and they weren't up to their efficient ways. CSU only scored 0.94 points per possession, a season-low for the normally high-powered offense. There's a strong correlation when Joe De Ciman is not clicking, neither is CSU overall. That happened tonight as De Ciman was limited to 3 points and 3 rebounds on 1-5 shooting from the field. De Ciman played 35 minutes. CSU also had 13 turnovers compared to 11 assists, another sign of an off night. 3-point shooting is this team's calling card, but CSU only made 7-23 shots from beyond the arc.
Depth Non-existent
Prentiss Nixon and Fred Richardson weren't dressed for the game, and Kimani Jackson didn't see the floor. CSU only played 7 players, with J.D. Paige and Antwan Scott being the lone reserves to see action. As we get closer to conference play, the bench will need to step up and play minutes to ease of the workload of players like Gian Clavell and Joe De Ciman.
