Colorado State held its first scrimmage of preseason camp Thursday, and as head coach Mike Bobo expected, there's a lot to work on.
The scrimmage, which was closed to the media, lasted about 100 plays, according to Bobo. No stats were provided afterward, but Bobo was available to the media.
Here's a handful of notes and quotes, as well as some video from Bobo's post-scrimmage media availability.
Wide receivers
One of the position groups with the most question marks heading into fall camp was the wide receivers, who must replace two of the top wideouts in school history with the departures of Joe Hansley and Rashard Higgins.
Three of CSU's top returning targets, Elroy Masters Jr., Xavier Williams and Olabisi Johnson were all participants in the scrimmage, but did so in red, no-contact jerseys. Junior college transfer Michael Gallup, who was in red earlier in camp, was a full participant and was a player Bobo mentioned as one of the standouts. Williams, who Bobo has displeased with at times over the last year, "made a couple of great catches, including one from Collin Hill that was about five yards behind him from Collin Hill," Bobo said.
The second-year head coach remains adamant that Williams has a lot of potential, but is still waiting to see him take the next step.
Newcomers
True freshmen Marvin Kinsey Jr. and Jamal Hicks stood out at running back and safety, respectively, according to Bobo. Kinsey broke a tackle two yards behind the scrimmage and turned it into a 50-yard gain, getting tackled inside the five-yard line.
Hicks, a freshman safety from Gardena, California, had an interception, and is playing now with the No. 2 defense behind Braylin Scott and Jake Schlager.
Quarterbacks
Bobo was mum on the performance of his quarterbacks until he can watch the film, noting that he has an immediate opinion from watching on the sideline, but that he wants to reserve changing the "pecking order" until he can he "see what he saw out there."
"They all had some moments," Bobo said. "Some had more bad moments than good moments, but they all had some bad moments. Nothing really got clicking offensively to where you could say, 'this guy is head and shoulders above everybody else. At the end of the day you've got one quarterback that's got a year's experience and the other three have none. You have to judge that, here's the quarterback with the experience and here's the other quarterbacks, what's going to happen when they get experience, are they going to be better than this guy? That's my job to decide."
Defensive backs
Tyree Simmons, Kevin Nutt and Jordon Vaden, along with true freshman Robert Awunganyi all impressed Bobo, with Nutt and Vaden both recording an interception, the latter of which Vaden returned nearly 100 yards for a touchdown on an errant throw.
Bobo said they will continue to push Awunganyi, likely running him with the top groups to get him as ready as they can before Sept. 2.
